The Boathouse at Rockette's Landing

Happy New Year! So for our New Year's celebration we went out to The Boathouse at Rockette's Landing. My wife and I have been to The Boathouse before and have really enjoyed ourselves. This evening was no different.

We started off with some sushi, the Rockettes Roll. I have to tell you that this is the best sushi roll I have ever had. It has smoked salmon with cream cheese as the main components and it just has such a wonderful smokey, creamy texture. I could easily knock down a few of these rolls. They are definitely worth trying, even if you don't normally like sushi. These may help you change you mind.

We also had an order of crab "puppies" Again, another great, and unique, thing to try at the Boathouse. Think of mini crab cakes rolled into balls and fried. They were crisp and crunchy on the outside and warm and creamy on the inside. If you like crab cakes and don't want to splurge for the more expensive version on the menu as a main course, then give these a go. You won't be disappointed.

Now on to the main course! I really have never gotten anything at The Boathouse that I did not enjoy and this night was no exception. I got the Pear and Maytag Pizza, which I loved. The pizzas have a nice crispy, thin crust, which depending on your preference may be a good or a bad thing. Those at the table also received equally wonderful food. The quality is high, and this is a really great place to get fresh seafood if that is your thing. Overall, this is a very high end place for a nice night out. A little on the pricey side, but not really when you consider the quality.

The atmosphere had it ups and downs. The Boathouse is loud. and I mean really loud! It is very hard to carry on a conversation, especially if the bar is hoppin'. We all had a hard time understanding and communicating with the waiter, who was not the nicest guy to begin with, and this led to a lot of frustration in regards to the menu and ordering. This was all compounded by a live band that was playing, which at first seemed lovely, but basically left it utterly impossible to talk with those we were sitting with without shouting. The ups were the view as always.

It was a great night out. The food is superb, the service was so-so, but for my money there is no better way to enjoy a meal and overlook our great city than at The Boathouse at Rockette's Landing.

4 out of 5 stars
